Cameronâs heart was hammering in his chest that Tuesday morning. He could feel the blood pounding in his ears, almost taste it at the back of his throat. Heâd not felt this nervous since being called into Mrs Whitworthâs office after he accidentally dented her car with his skateboard.
He knew he had to stay calm, though. Heâd seen enough programmes on TV to know that looking nervous wasnât going to do him any favours. People would spot that a mile off, especially in this day and age. He had to keep a level head and look as if he was just going about his normal daily business.
Heâd been awake for large portions of the night, going over the plan in his head. Heâd visualised every step, every street corner, every building on the route. He had his back story, too, in case he was stopped along the way. In case his nerves got the better of him and he looked too shifty for his own good. If he was stopped on the bus heading south, heâd say he was going to the model shop at Crossfields to get a birthday present for his dad. It was his dadâs birthday next week and he wanted to get him a model of his first car. If he was stopped heading out on the village bus service, heâd say he was going to see his mate, Ewan Sorfield. Heâd even messaged Ewan to arrange it all, but heâd message him again once he was clear of that leg of the journey to tell him something had come up. If he was stopped after that, heâd say he was heading to the leisure centre to enquire about membership, then on into town. He had it all covered.
Leah had got up early to get on a train to London with a friend. Thereâd be plenty of CCTV all over the station, as well as in London itself, categorically placing her in the city for the whole day. They were safe. Theyâd thought it all through.
Two days earlier, Leah had been round to her step-nanâs to visit. Sheâd taken the batteries out of the carbon dioxide monitor while her step-nan was in the loo, and had left a pair of rubber gloves behind the water butt in the garden. These were the gloves Cameron would wear when he went into the house and switched off the gas. Sheâd left a towel wrapped in a carrier bag, too. Heâd use this to step onto, rather than the kitchen floor, ensuring no footprints were left inside the house. The lounge was carpeted, so that was no problem. Thereâd be no trace of him ever having been there.
But no matter how much planning and preparation theyâd done, Cameron still couldnât shake the feeling that something could go horribly wrong. And if it did, itâd be curtains for both of them. What was the jail sentence for murder? Got to be well over twenty years, he thought. He couldnât do twenty years in jail.
